VW air-con parts

Volkswagen is one of the most common makes on South African roads, from the Polo Vivo and Polo to the Golf, Jetta, Tiguan, Amarok bakkie and Touareg. When a VW aircon stops blowing cold, the fault is usually one of a handful of parts. This guide explains the common Volkswagen aircon problems, the parts involved and how to order the right spares.

Common VW aircon problems

Aircon not cold, but the compressor is fine

Many modern VWs use a variable-displacement compressor without a traditional magnetic clutch. The output is controlled by an electronic compressor control valve. When the valve fails, the compressor keeps turning but the aircon barely cools, often worse in traffic. Replacing the control valve is far cheaper than a whole compressor, so it is worth checking first.

Weak cooling when standing still

If the aircon is cold on the highway but warm in traffic, look at the condenser and the radiator fan. VW condensers sit right at the front of the car and are easily damaged by stones on gravel roads, and a failed fan means the condenser can’t shed heat when the car isn’t moving.

Slow gas leaks and musty smells

Leaks from the evaporator inside the dash, perished O-rings or a damaged condenser will slowly let the gas escape. A regas only fixes the symptom; find the leak and replace the leaking part, the O-rings and the receiver drier.

Amarok and Touareg

The Amarok and Touareg work hard in heat and dust. Condenser damage, blocked cabin airflow and blower motor faults are common, and the larger systems put more load on the compressor, so keep the condenser clean and the system correctly charged.

VW aircon parts we supply

Car Cooling Consultants stocks original and quality generic air-conditioning spares for VW vehicles. Every part is supplied on quotation, so you get current pricing and stock from our sales team rather than an outdated online price.

PartWhat it doesSigns it needs replacing
CompressorPumps refrigerant around the systemNo cold air, noise when the aircon is on, leaking oil at the compressor
Compressor control valveRegulates output on variable (clutchless) compressorsAircon cools on the highway but not in traffic, or not at all, with a healthy compressor
CondenserReleases heat at the front of the carPoor cooling when stationary, stone damage, oily stains on the fins
EvaporatorCools the air inside the dashboardMusty smell, oily residue or water on the passenger floor, slow loss of gas
Expansion valveMeters refrigerant into the evaporatorFrosting pipes, cold then warm cycling, very high or low pressures
Receiver drierFilters and removes moistureMust be replaced whenever the system is opened or a compressor fails
Pressure switch / sensorProtects the system from wrong pressuresCompressor will not engage, fan runs non-stop
Blower motor & condenser fanMoves air through the cabin and condenserWeak airflow, noise, aircon only cold when driving

How to order the right part for your VW

  • OEM number: the number stamped or printed on the old part is the most reliable way to match a replacement. Our search ignores dashes and spaces, so type it exactly as you see it.
  • VIN or chassis number: add it on the quote form and our team will confirm fitment before supplying.
  • Model code and year: chassis codes (for example W204 or F30) narrow things down far better than the model name alone.
  • Refrigerant type: check the sticker under the bonnet. Older systems use R134a; many newer European models use R1234yf, which needs its own fittings, oil and gas.

When a compressor fails internally, debris spreads through the system. Replace the receiver drier and expansion valve at the same time and flush the lines, otherwise the new compressor can fail early. We supply the full set, including O-rings and the correct compressor oil.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my VW Polo aircon not cold?

The most common causes are low gas from a leak, a faulty compressor control valve, a blocked or damaged condenser, or a failed cooling fan. Have the pressures checked before buying parts so you replace the right one.

Can I just regas my VW aircon?

If the gas is low, it has leaked out somewhere. A regas without fixing the leak only lasts a short while. Find and repair the leak, replace the receiver drier, then regas.

Do you supply original VW aircon parts?

We supply both original and quality generic parts. Ask for either on your quote and our team will advise on price and availability.
