BMW climate control systems are complex, and a BMW aircon that stops cooling can have several causes, from a control valve to a cooling-system fault. This guide covers the common BMW aircon problems on the 1, 3 and 5 Series and the X3 and X5, the parts that usually need replacing and how to order the right spares.
Common BMW aircon problems
Aircon not cold, compressor turning
Many BMWs use a clutchless, variable-displacement compressor controlled by an electronic compressor control valve. When the valve sticks, the system stays warm even though the compressor is spinning. Check the valve before condemning the compressor.
Compressor switched off by the system
BMW climate modules protect the system by switching the compressor off when pressures are out of range. An overheating cooling system, a failed condenser fan or a blocked condenser can all trigger this. On newer models, faults with the low-temperature radiator that sits beside the condenser have also been known to switch the aircon off, so a proper diagnosis saves money.
Condenser damage
BMW condensers sit low at the front and take the brunt of stones and debris. A damaged or blocked condenser gives poor cooling in traffic and can leak gas. Replace the receiver drier, often built into the condenser, at the same time.
Evaporator leaks
A slowly leaking evaporator causes a gradual loss of cooling and sometimes a musty smell. Replacing it is a dashboard-out job on most BMWs, so it pays to use a quality part.
BMW aircon parts we supply
Car Cooling Consultants stocks original and quality generic air-conditioning spares for BMW vehicles. Every part is supplied on quotation, so you get current pricing and stock from our sales team rather than an outdated online price.
| Part | What it does | Signs it needs replacing |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor | Pumps refrigerant around the system | No cold air, noise when the aircon is on, leaking oil at the compressor |
| Compressor control valve | Regulates output on variable (clutchless) compressors | Aircon cools on the highway but not in traffic, or not at all, with a healthy compressor |
| Condenser | Releases heat at the front of the car | Poor cooling when stationary, stone damage, oily stains on the fins |
| Evaporator | Cools the air inside the dashboard | Musty smell, oily residue or water on the passenger floor, slow loss of gas |
| Expansion valve | Meters refrigerant into the evaporator | Frosting pipes, cold then warm cycling, very high or low pressures |
| Receiver drier | Filters and removes moisture | Must be replaced whenever the system is opened or a compressor fails |
| Pressure switch / sensor | Protects the system from wrong pressures | Compressor will not engage, fan runs non-stop |
| Blower motor & condenser fan | Moves air through the cabin and condenser | Weak airflow, noise, aircon only cold when driving |

How to order the right part for your BMW
- OEM number: the number stamped or printed on the old part is the most reliable way to match a replacement. Our search ignores dashes and spaces, so type it exactly as you see it.
- VIN or chassis number: add it on the quote form and our team will confirm fitment before supplying.
- Model code and year: chassis codes (for example W204 or F30) narrow things down far better than the model name alone.
- Refrigerant type: check the sticker under the bonnet. Older systems use R134a; many newer European models use R1234yf, which needs its own fittings, oil and gas.
When a compressor fails internally, debris spreads through the system. Replace the receiver drier and expansion valve at the same time and flush the lines, otherwise the new compressor can fail early. We supply the full set, including O-rings and the correct compressor oil.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my BMW aircon not blowing cold?
Common causes are a faulty compressor control valve, low gas from a leak, a damaged condenser, a failed fan or the system switching the compressor off because of a cooling or pressure fault. A scan and pressure test will identify which.
Is the receiver drier part of the condenser on a BMW?
On many BMW models the drier is integrated into the condenser or fitted as a cartridge in it. Replace the drier whenever the system is opened.
Can you confirm fitment for my BMW?
Yes. Add your VIN or the OEM number from the old part to your quote and our team will confirm the correct part before supplying.
